My favorite spot in Pokemon Black and White
5/17/2026I love Pokemon Black and White. It is hands down my favorite game in the Pokemon series. There is a lot that I love about Pokemon BW for it to be considered my favorite in the Pokemon franchise. But there if there is one part of BW that I absolutely love about this game, it's this...
So, Pokemon BW's themes is all about Unity. Whether that be the bond between people and Pokemon or the bonds between trainers. That, despite seeming like we are all different we are all a like in some form or fashion and because of that, we can all be unitied. This is why, out of all the moments in this game, this is my favorite moment in the whole game.
In the big metropolitan city of Castelia City, near the exit there's a building standing out from all the rest. Entering this building you'll find that there is a party going on. Now, I'll let the following footage speak for itself:
As you can see, there is infact a party going on. But, what's more interesting is that in this party there are a few NPCs of different nationalities speaking their native tounge! BUT that's not all! This... THIS. I absolutely LOVE this moment:
Do you know what this translates to? What she is saying is: "This is my first time here! But this lovely trip has made me feel right at home! Next time, I'm bringing my friends along!"
The first time I read this message when I first played this game, brought a warming feeling to my heart. I, am hispanic. I can sort of speak/read spanish having picked it up from my family. So, to experience a fictional party, where people from different parts of the world are enjoying themselves with other people from different parts of the world, and that a fellow spanish speaking person was in it, I... felt included. Furthermore, it was nice to hear this traveler express how much they were enjoying their trip in Unova.
It has been stated in an Iwata asks interview that Junichi Masuda, one of the directors and composer for the Pokemon series based the Unova region off of America's New York initially because he wanted to hold a Pokemon concert over there. But after having been there for himself, he found out how facinating it was that so many diverse people from around the world have gathered into one big city that he thought it was the perfect place to make a new Pokemon region out of. By the way, here's a fun fact: Unova in Japan is called, "イッシュ(Isshu)". This is because the name is derived from the Japanese word for "one kind, 一種類(isshurui)". The reason for this is, in Masuda's own words:
Masuda Pokémon and people of all kinds gather in this region, resulting in tashu (Japanese for "various kinds").
Iwata Oh, so Isshu comes from 一種類 isshurui (one kind).
Masuda Right. There may be many kinds 多種(tashu) of people gathered there, but if you look from afar, the region looks like it only has one kind イッシュ(isshu), so we gave it the name イッシュ(isshu). In that way, it's a lot like New York.
In my eyes, nothing expresses Pokemon BW's core themes more than this party in Castelia City. A party where people of different nationalities band together, and have fun. Where despite everyone being different, they are all the same. And to feel included in this party, it made my day. This small, easy to miss location, is my favorite spot in Pokemon Black and White.
"There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:28
